OO is a nominee of 2008's Geotourism Award organized by National Geographic and Ashoka Changemakers. The award identifies and recognises organization that enhances the geographical character of a place: its environment, heritage, culture, aesthetics, and the well-being of its residents.

OO is listed in Hati.org.my, a resource and platform for people and organisations that are involved in community work in Malaysia.

OO is the regional partner of Survival International based in UK, an organisation that helps tribal peoples defend their lives, protect their lands and determine their own futures.

To enjoy Orang Asli village, wear kilts

It’s not everyday we get to see Scots in kilts you know. Especially in Orang Asli village.
It was a smashing jaunt. Most importantly, OO says a big thank to Nick and the gang who flew in all the way from Scotland to see the hidden side of Malaysia. It was especially nice of them to [...]

Going wildside in Malaysia

Rugged places, flower patches and a whole lot of leeches. “Now I know why you asked for our weight, height and fitness when we signed up for this trek”, quipped Kasey between huffing and puffing on the gruesome uphill trail.
We recently hosted a lovely couple, Kasey and Michele from New Jersey US, into raw [...]

Family Charity Drive in the Jungle

Everyone loves doing something different on weekends.
Organized by OO, the normally dull jungle villages of Orang Asli ignited with excitement when four Danish families arrived on a balmy Saturday overflowing with the spirit of charity. Driving all the way from Kuala Lumpur, expatriate family members generously gave away cargoes of toys, food, cooking oil and [...]

Tanjung Piai for happy endings

Travellers who believe they are intrepid but ignore Tanjung Piai should be flogged.
For their own good.
You may ask “Where in the world is that?”. Well, one only needs to gaze southward to answer that question. If you’re one of those looking for some healing properties of a good weekend vista that’s untouched by conveyor-belt tourism, [...]

Jungle trekking enjoyed shaken and stirred

There is no way to know how crazy jungle travel is until your legs lurch to a stop in a mud hole - and that’s the normal ones, says the guide.
Also, being at the bottom of the jungle food chain can be a scary thought. Ending up as lunch for some carnivourous wildlife - not [...]

Towels go travellin’ for a good cause

This is a story about towels. A tale of how they journeyed from lofty Genting Highland to hidden communities that pepper the outer ream of lowland Kinta valley. And the story finished on a sweet note, thanks to Edward Holloway, Soon Hoe and Kit.

It all started when Soon Hoe, the director of Hati.org.my, a resource [...]

Thank you Oldstock !

The final days of 2008 are ending up rosy after all. Just when we thought nobody cares, someone waltzed in unexpectedly and gave the spirit of charity a hefty lift.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Fadhil Isma who live in Johor Bahru for responding to our plea for donation after [...]

Look ma, bare hands !

This is as primitive as it gets.
When we first saw Bah Andak, 38, dived into the cold river, we thought he was having a bath. Seconds later, the Orang Asli native emerged with a fish in his hand and it dawned upon us that we have just witnessed man’s earliest hunting art form.
Recently, out of [...]

Ecotourism in Malaysia pays back

Behind every celebration, there’s a story worth telling - and Ulu Geroh’s reads like a fairy tale.
Besides being the first native community in Malaysia to rewardingly run a self-sufficient ecotourism project, the venture shows one do not need commercial rhetoric, big budget and touristy gimmickry to stand out from the already crowded holidaymaking industry.
Semai natives [...]

Charity drive veers wayside

This is disappointing. Despite chalking up more than 10,478 readership hits for this blog since the “Buy a soccer ball for Orang Asli kids” post in Sept 2008, the response was way below par. OK, to be frank, we kinda expected it. The majority is too consumed with urban life or perhaps their own personal [...]
