Rafflesia - A flower that plays dead

Think of Rafflesia as bohemian.
It possesses nothing, yet contrives to exist on that nothing at the expense of its host’s generosity. It has no root, stem, branch or leaf. Botanists are not sure whether to call it a plant or not. Though it shy away from view mostly, it is guided by ambition of “making [...]

Prince of Jungle Butterflies - Rajah Brooke Birdwing

“On taking it (the butterfly) out of my net and opening the glorious wings, my heart began to beat violently, the blood rushed to my head, and I felt more like fainting, than I have done in apprehension of immediate death. I had a headache the rest of the day, so great was the excitement [...]

People getting lost in the [...]

Ipoh is roughly 200 km north (1.5 - 2 hrs drive) capital Kuala Lumpur and 140 km south (1.5 hrs drive) from Penang island. Hence, Ipoh is a convenient pitstop and a good base if one is [...]

Malaysian leech rule #1 - Don’t scream for your guide

Nobody like leeches. While trekkers never loose more than a few drops of blood to leeches every trip, their reputation make first-timers to the jungle cringe like they are dealing with Dracula.
If you walk into a jungle and see lots of them, your guide has made good his promise of untouched wilderness. See, leeches shy [...]

Malaysian rainforest welcomes the Danes

THE DANES are people we’d gladly go on a retreat over and over with, anytime.

After spotting our blog a few months ago followed by a bout of email correspondence, last week, Louise, Lene, Martin and Jonas wiggled their way to Malaysia to enjoy an overnight romp. Coincidently Ken Yeh, founder of the famed Marrayeh Architects, [...]

Orang Asli - The hidden people of Malaysia

We made news again.

OO’s community work was singled out by writer Sheila Rahman last week and after a short ping pong of emails, our blog “Take The Path Less Ordinary” is featured in Malay Mail today.

Started out as a simple four-page newspaper with light news and advertisements for Europeans in Kuala Lumpur in 1896, today, [...]
