How to be an intrepid traveler

An intrepid traveler goes to small towns. A tourist prefers cities.
When you show good manners, you’re an intrepid traveler. When you’re annoying, you’re a tourist.
The word intrepid is measured by mindset, not how many places visited. Winging a trail and not knowing how it will end up is exciting. In intrepid mode, you are gutsy, [...]

H1N1 flu, what to do

We know you have worked hard and saved long for a dream holiday. Nonetheless, don’t soldier on if you are suddenly down with;
1. Sudden fever
2. Sudden cough
3. Runny nose
Yes, it’s broadly the same symptoms of ordinary flu.
That’s why it is spreading like wild fire because travellers think it’s just another mild setback. Nothing to worry [...]

Orang Asli blowpipe making

In the heart of every Orang Asli man is his blowpipe. He’ll sleep with it if the wife lets him.
“Look, this is the Kasap”, quips Bah Dongong, 67, the walking jungle encyclopedia points at a bamboo patch. “We usually locate Orang Asli graveyard next to the Kasap”. It’s easy to see how much respect Orang [...]

Jungle taboos and supernatural hoodoos

There is no substitute for experience. This article is written in collaboration with our mentor Datuk Khoo Ah See, Malaysia’s highly decorated jungle warfare specialist who led the Pasukan Polis Hutan (PPH or Police Field Force) as Battalion Commander in his heydays. Today, the walking jungle encyclopedia is happily retired at 60+ and lives in [...]

Jungle trekking enjoyed shaken and stirred

There is no way to know how crazy jungle travel is until your legs lurch to a stop in a mud hole - and that’s the normal ones, says the guide.
Also, being at the bottom of the jungle food chain can be a scary thought. Ending up as lunch for some carnivourous wildlife - not [...]

People getting lost in the [...]

Downsizing your comfort to less than 10kg

Flight fare to Malaysia - RM2,300 …. ka-ching !
Jungle adventure tour package - RM800 …. ka-ching !
What to pack …… clueless
Everyone knows how to fill up the luggage for a holiday trip to snazzy beach resort or urban destination but scores very low when it comes to going off grid.
Ok, to be fair, one need [...]

Malaysian leech rule #1 - Don’t scream for your guide

Nobody like leeches. While trekkers never loose more than a few drops of blood to leeches every trip, their reputation make first-timers to the jungle cringe like they are dealing with Dracula.
If you walk into a jungle and see lots of them, your guide has made good his promise of untouched wilderness. See, leeches shy [...]

Dodging danger and hazard in the Malaysian jungle and countryside

“Malang tidak berbau” - Malay proverb
(English translation: Danger has no scent)
What people don’t know about the jungle could easily fill up an emergency room.
Lurking hazards are everywhere and offer no warning. Before you trot into the countryside or jungle, any self respecting guide will usually give you a pep talk about possible dangers that [...]

Orang Asli - The hidden people of Malaysia

We made news again.

OO’s community work was singled out by writer Sheila Rahman last week and after a short ping pong of emails, our blog “Take The Path Less Ordinary” is featured in Malay Mail today.

Started out as a simple four-page newspaper with light news and advertisements for Europeans in Kuala Lumpur in 1896, today, [...]
