Towels go travellin’ for a good cause

This is a story about towels. A tale of how they journeyed from lofty Genting Highland to hidden communities that pepper the outer ream of lowland Kinta valley. And the story finished on a sweet note, thanks to Edward Holloway, Soon Hoe and Kit.

It all started when Soon Hoe, the director of Hati.org.my, a resource and platform for people and organizations that are involved in community work in Malaysia, started the ball rolling when he made a casual inquiry on what can be done for Orang Asli. The answer was: We need towels. In rainy season, children catch cold easily and having thick towels as blankets go along way in keeping warm in the jungle. That got him reveling in high gear and through his network of friends, Edward of Genting Resort generous offer rose to the occasion - 200 towels. It was more than what we asked.

Alas, the situation wasn’t clean cut.

Transfering towels in bulk from highland to lowland was another huddle to ace. But throwing in the towel was far from everyone’s mind. Again, after a flurry of emails and phone calls among us, Ed whizzed the towels to Soon Hoe in KL and over a weekend, Soon Hoe drove the cargo to us in Ipoh.

Last week, we are please to say that all towels have finally made it to the homes of Orang Asli after weeks of 4×4 buckling and village hopping through every imaginable terrain and weather. For most, thick fluffy white towel comes too rarely. Appropriate enough, those who received the towels quivered with excitement. It was a great emotional payoff and we would like to share this with Ed, Soon Hoe, Kit and everyone at Hati.org.my and Genting Resort who made the towel trip possible. Thank you.
