Medan Gopeng Ipoh Bus Station illustrated in pictures

Ipoh is a town smacked in between capital Kuala Lumpur and Penang. So, if you’re thinking of winging any interesting sites in this region, Medan Gopeng bus station should be the epicenter of your public transport muse. The first thing that strikes one about Medan Gopeng is its locality which is slightly on the outskirt of Ipoh. Hence, one need to hop on the local bus service or taxi to get to the town center. This brings one to another important bus station to know - Medan Kidd, the old bus station that houses all bus services to other hamlets, countryside and regions around Perak state.

So, chant this mantra ….

“Medan Gopeng for cross-country travels”
“Medan Kidd for within-state travels”

Between them is a short 20 mins bus or taxi ride under normal traffic conditions.

Like all major public transport hubs in Malaysia, Medan Gopeng is teeming with ticketing kiosks that offer direct buses to big towns like Penang, Kuala Lumpur (at Puduraya and Putra station), Kota Bahru, Alor Setar, Kangar, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan, Melaka, Seremban, Johor Bahru and Singapore.

Between KL and Penang, Medan Gopeng bus station is a crucial place to know if you’re thinking of covering interesting places like Taiping, Cameron Highlands or Pangkor island. It is relatively new and rarely gets any mentions in established guide books or maps. For the time being, there’s no hotel or tourist amenity around Medan Gopeng but 24hours Mc Donald eatery, local eateries, banks with ATM, pharmacies and convenience stores are within 5 mins walking distance from the bus station.

We’ll let pictures show you the way …..

Taxi kiosk in Medan Gopeng offers rides to Penang, Butterworth, KL, Lumut, Cameron Highlands, Taiping and course anywhere in Ipoh (usually RM10 fare one way). At time of writing, a one way daytime fare to KL is about RM230, Cameron Highlands RM150, Lumut RM100 and Penang island RM220. As some taxi men may not understand English, it’s best to get the kiosk administrator to communicate with your taxi driver and agree on the price before hopping in.

Air Asia Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), Ipoh-KLIA-LCCT airport - TRITON bus departures from Medan Gopeng to the KL international airport and LCCT are scheduled at 2:30am, 6:00am, 1:30pm and 8:30pm. Other popular bus companies that ply Ipoh-KLIA-LCCT airports are Yoyo Worldwide (internet bookings offered) and Star Shuttle but bear in mind these buses may not necessary pick up or leave passengers in Medan Gopeng . Yoyo and Star Shuttle’s buses operate from Bercham district in Ipoh, where their offices are.

Penang-Ipoh-Cameron Highland-KL - KURNIA BISTARI’s buses are perhaps the most popular among backpackers as they get you direct to Tanah Rata and back. Buses leave at 11:15am, 1:15pm, 5:15pm and 6:45pm. This service also connects Tanah Rata to Ipoh, KL Puduraya/Duta and Penang. Although air-con, the down side is the buses are pretty old and lack comfort compared to regular express buses.

Ipoh-Cameron Highland - The KINTA OMNIBUS non air-con buses that ply Medan Kidd-Medan Gopeng-Tanah Rata via new road Simpang Pulai is another insider account that should interest backpackers (no offense but the cheap fares translate to windows that sometimes won’t shut well during rainy hours) , especially those en-routing Lumut/Pangkor. Bus departures 8.00am, 11.00am, 3.00pm & 6.00pm.

Perak Roadways bus hub

Perak Roadways buses are ancient and make multiple stops along Ipoh Lumut trunk road that cut through paddy fields, villages and hamlets. Expect the journey to last 1.5-2 hrs, although a taxi can do it in 50 mins.

Ipoh-Lumut (Pangkor) - This route requires a tad more effort. If you drop in via Medan Gopeng there’s no direct bus to Lumut or Taiping. You have to first use the IPOH OMNIBUS to get to Medan Kidd. Once there, you must remember there 2 bus stations near one and other. The bigger one play host to buses that service areas such as Taiping, Kuala Kangsar and the interiors of Perak states. If you are aiming for Lumut (mainland jetty for Pangkor), look for a smaller station with red-coloured buses lined up. They are tagged “PERAK ROADWAYS”.

Ipoh-Taiping, Teluk Intan, Grik and other small towns - By the way, Medan Kidd is also the spring board to lesser known (but fabulous) places like Taiping, Teluk Intan and Grik, the gateway to Royal Belum Forest Reserve. These are some of the best spots rarely mentioned in any guide books or tourist maps, mainly because their are off-grid from the North South Highway.

The blue balloons indicate the bus stations; left for Medan Kidd and right for Medan Gopeng. Zoom in and out to look at how the road grid connects them. Don’t attempt to walk. It’s a long way in the hot sun. Taxis usually charge RM10-15 for a one way trip between the stations.

Ipoh Omnibus bone shaker - If you don’t have deep pocket, look out for Ipoh Omnibus Co.’s bus that shuttles between Medan Kidd, Ipoh town center and Medan Gopeng. Depending on where you want to hop off, the fare is only RM1-2. Bus departs every 30 mins or so during daytime.
